Welcome to the all-new
Silver Creek Youth Orchestra
Georgetown's first Youth Orchestra
Playing music in a youth orchestra offers a host of opportunities, from performing to meeting peers who are equally as passionate about music, to preparing for auditions. Youth orchestras create a community in which musically-minded students can thrive. Regardless of whether you go on to study music, chemistry, engineering or law, a youth symphony experience can be a positive guiding force in socialization and development.
As a newly-formed youth orchestra, Silver Creek Youth Orchestra (SCYO) will be offering one group and one performance for the first year. This will be an educational orchestra program with a performance element.
The goal of the Silver Creek Youth Orchestra is to offer a Junior Symphony offering ensembles for students of various ages and levels of playing in progressive levels:
- Junior level string ensemble
- Junior Intermediate level Youth Strings ensemble
- Junior Advanced level youth string ensemble
- Junior Advanced level Youth Symphony Orchestra
The Silver Creek Youth Orchestra program (SCYO) season will offer regularly-scheduled rehearsals, sectionals coached by a seasoned conductor and youth orchestra musician and concerts in Georgetown, Ontario, Canada.
Instruments
All standard orchestral instruments (violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba, percussion). While some orchestral repertoire uses saxophone, standard orchestras do not have a permanent saxophonist (though other opportunities exist in extracurricular wind ensembles where saxophones are needed).
Other things to consider include private lessons, which are often required to join a youth orchestra.
Time commitment
Being a member of a youth orchestra, as with any team or club, involves a significant time commitment. Consider that there are private lessons and rehearsals and if you are playing in your school band or orchestra, and participating in a youth orchestra, you may find that your practice time needs to be increased to keep up. Missing even one rehearsal can have a major impact on the success of the orchestra.
While this may seem overwhelming, the experience can be viewed as preparation for University or College, where deadlines, finals, papers and practice all must go together in harmony. Students learn to develop important life skills such as teamwork, concentration, prioritization, practise and much more.
About the Orchestra
The youth orchestras performs standard orchestral repertoire, however, we may also run special programs such as jazz orchestra, chamber music or performing out into the community in small concerts.
